I have started and quit so many Korean textbooks. This one is different because it is a real story. I want to know what Nyangbae and Meongbae do next, so I keep reading, and the Korean comes along with it.

Key sentence patterns come back again and again throughout the story. By the third or fourth time I saw a pattern, I already knew what it meant. No flashcards, no drilling. It just settled in.

I had just finished learning the alphabet and was scared to open anything with real sentences. This was written for exactly that moment. Short sentences, familiar words, and enough support that I never felt lost.

I read each chapter first, then listen with my eyes closed. Hearing the same sentences I had just read is what finally made spoken Korean stop sounding like one long blur to me.

The grammar explanations are clear and to the point. They tell me what I need for the sentence in front of me and then get out of the way. That is exactly what I wanted.

I shadow the audio line by line. My Korean friend noticed after about three weeks and asked what I had been doing differently. That was a good day.
